After 20 years of growing production, Ecuador has joined Brazil as the leading cocoa exporter in Latin America, positioning it self as the world leader in fine cocoa. The famed local variety Arriba Nacional, which is responsible for 60% of the country’s output, was awarded an Appellation of Origin in 2008. The small producers of the Unocace cooperative bring together families located in the province of Los Rios & Guayas in Ecuador, a province with a climate conducive to cocoa farming.

UNOCACE COOPERATIVE

The Unocace Cooperative consists of family-owned farms of 5 to 10 hectares, growing Arriba Nacional, or “black gold” as it is known locally. As organic farmers, these small producers are highly aware of the importance of preserving their environment, ensuring the implementation of a sustainable agricultural policy that looks to the future.
